Laughter is the best medicine
If you want to forget about all the problems, whether they are yours or the planet’s, you should laugh at them instead of pounding your head with them. That’s the main goal of The National Museum of Press’s “Porto Cartoon”. It’s an annual cartoon competition, and this year’s theme was “the Globalization in Humour”. Dozens of cartoons made by international and national authors who were ranked by expert judges were in display for the public at CGD’s Headquarters.
There’s no way you could avoid a smile while looking at those cartoons. The authors all chose the irony, sarcasm and exaggeration (probably those are the best weapons to make humour). The best thing about this exhibition is that even though you’ll leave smiling and laughing, five minutes later you realise that all is true and it’s quite concerning living this way.
This was this year’s winner. As you can see, the author of this cartoon is showing how technology is everywhere and people can use it as a weapon (literally) nowadays.
The exhibition’s space itself has nothing to be commented on. It’s just 4 walls and a roof, really. Basically, CGD’s are their main sponsor, so it makes sense the exhibition takes place there.
If you really liked this exhibition, you can see it again at http://www.cartoonvirtualmuseum.org/i_portocartoonrisodomundo2007.htm
Stage 4
1. I didn’t quite like the review on that website. It was too personal and not as open-minded as one would expect.
2. It was quite hard to do any kind of research, because this exhibition had hundreds of authors participating in. I’ve learned what I “already knew”: this kind of exhibitions can make us laugh, but in a way they are spreading an important message, a crying for help to make this world better. In return of a smile, make something matters.
3. I was quite happy to see some humour exhibition which it was something I hadn’t do for a long time so I actually enjoyed being there and spending time doing so.
